A Deadliest Catch Hero Emerges ‘GoPro’ :

What started out like a trickle of cheap digital camera formats this year has turned into a full on court press with the newest darling of in-your-face “action technology” gear. So, don’t be the first person to see their entertainment career destroyed by missing the boat on the latest craze.

GoProThey are small rugged, cute, waterproof and fit right in the palm of your hand. No, I am not talking about the Smurfs, but the new GoPro Hero line of cameras (http://gopro.com).
These small cameras are everywhere and digital media is beginning to crop up on all of the episodic TV and live performance projects I have been working on in the last couple months. I knew the device had officially arrived when I realized everything with wheels or a helmet at the 2013 X Games had a GoPro mount and camera locked in place. And don’t get me started on reality TV. Shows like Deadliest Catch and Gold Rush use GoPro Cameras for Everything.

Action sports and its long love affair with the POV camera is nothing new, and with the continued push in reality TV programming, including game shows like Wipeout! (http://abc.go.com/shows/wipeout) and 101 Ways To Leave A Game Show (http://abc.go.com/shows/101-ways-to-leave-a-game-show) can’t help themselves when it comes to giving the audience a glimpse of the contestant’s heart wrenching drop from the side of a building or cannon blasted from some mega water slide. How could the production crew resist? Right?

Price wise, these units compare to your average digital, running from $180 for the standard Hero model and up to $300 for a fancy one intended for your helmet or the hood of your rally car. You can trick it out with a bunch of accessories, and, of course, waterproof capabilities and even 3D!

OK – What do we really care about? The Tech specs:

Camera Optics

Lens Type: Fixed Focus (2ft/.6m – ∞), glass

Aperture: f/2.8 (high performance in low-light situations)

Angle of View: 170º ultra wide angle in WVGA, 720p, or 960p mode


HD Video Resolution Modes: (subject to change, pending final firmware release)

960p = 1280×960 pixels (4:3), 30 fps, 12 Mbit/s data rate

720p = 1280×720 pixels (16:9), 30 fps, 8 Mbit/s data rate

WVGA = 848×480 pixels (16:9), 60 fps, 8 Mbit/s data rate

Before you run out and buy one of these suckers, you might ask yourself, what is the catch? Well, you will notice above that the GoPro Hero only shoots 30 or 60 fps. No big deal (to most people), but once you get your media into post, how are you going to get it to jive with everything else? At 30fps nothing you record using this camera will look good dropped into something shot at 23.98, it is going to look “steppy” and will not do your project any justice. If you are using multiple video resolutions to complete your TV show or film, the GoPro is one weapon in you arsenal you might want to only use when you are do a POV during a running gun battle or motorcycle chase.
